Açai (phonetically pronounced as aa-saa-ee) berry is very popular among health enthusiasts
It is a delicious and healthy indulgence that Errol Alegre Jr. used to enjoy when he was still in Guam, but could only savor as a smoothie bowl when he transferred here in the Philippines.
But what is necessity if not the mother of all invention?
Errol’s need for açai berries led him to a discussion with his friend, chef consultant Justin David, which in turn led to several months of research and development that began in the latter half of 2024.
Their efforts gave birth to Açai Always at SM Megamall, offering açai-based soft serve and sorbet bowls served with homemade granola and honey and topped with fruits.
“When we pitched this to SM, a lot of their executives have been saying they’ve been waiting for this to come to the Philippines. The journey has been a big challenge but it was fulfilling for us. We are happy to bring this healthier indulgence here,” Errol said.
“Everything we can source locally, we do so, except for the açai. That’s our little way to help our local farmers, too,” Justin added.
The soft serve starts at P115 for a small cup with no toppings. A medium-sized cup with one fruit and two toppings will fetch for P215, while the large one goes for P255.
The sorbet bowls, at P285 each, have three flavor varieties: Tropical Bowl with banana, muscat grapes, mango, and strawberry; Island Bowl with banana, pineapple, mango, and strawberry; and the Always Bowl that can be customized with pineapple, muscat grapes, mango, or strawberry.
