Phivolcs records volcanic quakes, ash emissions on Mt. Kanlaon

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday reported that volcanic earthquakes and ash emissions were observed from the summit crater of Mount Kanlaon in the Negros Island.

There were 13 volcanic earthquakes that occurred and up to 4,246 tons of sulfur dioxide flux last Nov. 14. Alert Level 2 stays over the volcano.

Phivolcs also recorded 1,000 meters tall voluminous, continuous degassing with occasional ash emission in a northwest drift. The edifice of the volcano remains inflated.

The state seismic agency posted a time-lapse footage showing ash emissions from the Kanlaon Volcano summit crater that was observed between 8:45 a.m. and 10:02 a.m. on Friday.

“These events generated grayish plumes that rose 350 meters above the crater before drifting west as recorded by the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory-Canlaon City IP cameras,” it said.

Phivolcs still prohibits entry into the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone and flying any aircraft close to the volcano.

The public must exercise caution on possible hazards that could occur, such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity.
