Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. on Wednesday said that the Philippines requires a comprehensive missile defense system to fully protect its territory under the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC).
“Not only the Typhon but also other missile systems kasi kailangan natin ng (because we need) comprehensive air defense and maritime defense systems,” he said.
When asked about plans to acquire versions of the U.S.-made Medium Range Capability Typhon Missile System as part of the ongoing AFP modernization program, Brawner noted that the withdrawal or continued presence of the weapon will depend on the Philippines-U.S. Mutual Defense Board-Security Board.
The Typhon Missile System, capable of firing Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles and Standard Missile-6, has a range exceeding 1,000 miles.
It is currently deployed in northern Luzon as part of the Salaknib exercises between Filipino and American units.
The CADC aims to address threats to Philippine territorial integrity and sovereign rights, calling for more aircraft, ships, and various missile systems to be effective. Once these assets are acquired and operational, Brawner stated they would form an “integrated defense.”
