The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has placed four new historical markers in the city of Marawi in Lanao del Sur.
The “Pagtatanggol sa Marawi” and “Labanan sa Marawi” markers were unveiled at the Lanao People’s Park and Public Library. The unveiling was led by NHCP chair Regalado Trota Jose Jr., Lanao del Sur Provincial Governor Mamintal A. Adiong Jr., and Drieza Lininding, the representative of the relatives of the late Maranao military leader Amai Pakpak.
The “Amai Pakpak” marker was unveiled at Amai Pakpak Central Elementary School by Jose and Marawi City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Anna-Zenaida Unte. The “Kota Marawi” marker was unveiled at the city gymnasium in the Marawi City Hall by Jose and Marawi City Mayor Atty. Majul U. Gandamra.
Representatives from the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, the Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur, the City Government of Marawi, the Marawi Sultanate League, and the relatives of Amai Pakpak also delivered messages for the occasion.
The unveiling of the historical markers on Aug. 18 was part of the celebrations for History Month and the 84th cityhood anniversary of Marawi.
