TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite—Hazy skies attributed to the volcanic smog or ‘vog’ emitted by Taal Volcano in Batangas forced several local government units (LGUs) across the Calabarzon region to suspend classes, including in parts of Cavite and Laguna.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the volcano remains under Alert Level 1 as of Monday, August 19. It has emitted 3,355 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) with the agency continuously monitoring ongoing fumarolic activity.
Phivolcs said the volcano released volcanic gases and smoke reaching up to 2,400 meters high, causing ‘vog’ in nearby areas.
Classes in all levels, both in public and private, are suspended effective 12:00 noon on Monday across the following towns and cities: uptown Alfonso, Mendez, Indang, Amadeo, Silang, Bailen, Tagaytay City, Trece Marites City and General Trias in Cavite; Sta. Rosa, Biñan, Cabuyao, Calamba in Laguna; and Cuenca, Talisay, Lemery, San Pascual, Tanauan City in Batangas.
The LGUs issued the cancellations to ensure the safety and well-being of students. The Department of Health (DOH) Calabarzon advised the public to wear face masks to minimize exposure to harmful pollutants.
