Angelica Yulo, mother of Olympic double gold medalist Carlos Yulo, tearfully apologized to her son on Wednesday following a public dispute that escalated on social media.
The disagreements, which involved hurtful posts about her son and his girlfriend, Chloe San Jose, grew out of proportion, leading to widespread attention.
“As a mother, it hurts me deeply that the kind and well-raised son I nurtured no longer listens to my guidance. If my criticisms of your girlfriend were wrong, I apologize. I am just a concerned mother,” said Angelica Yulo.
She expressed her grievances during a press conference at the Heroes Manila Hotel in Malate, accompanied by lawyer Raymond Fortun. Her husband, Mark, and daughter, Joriegel, were also present. The family requested privacy as they work through their personal issues with Carlos upon his return to Manila next Tuesday.
Carlos Yulo, 23, is scheduled to arrive home on August 13, two weeks after winning medals in the floor exercise and vault events.
The family’s issues escalated when Angelica Yulo, in an interview, revealed her involvement in her son’s finances. She admitted to withdrawing money from Carlos’ account to transfer to hers for the final payment on a property in Cavite.
Carlos had previously stated that he forgave his mother for issues related to his incentives following his world championship win in 2022.
Lawyer Fortun emphasized that the family intends to resolve these matters privately.
Meanwhile, Carlos’ father, Mark, expressed hope for reconciliation, noting that their issues with their son were minor and could be resolved through discussions once he returns to Manila.
“This has blown out of proportion. It’s just a small problem,” said Mark in an interview with the Manila Standard.
