Defending Philippine sovereignty and sovereign rights in the West Philippines Sea (WPS) remains a government priority in advancing its defense capabilities and bilateral relations, said Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo during the US-PH 2+2 Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue in Manila.
“I have conveyed that the situation in the West Philippine Sea and the South China Sea remains a priority to our government,” Manalo said.
“In line with our treaty obligations, we discussed recent developments and committed to continue our work together in upholding Philippine sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction,” he added.
Manalo emphasized that the dialogue with US Secretaries Antony Blinken and Lloyd Austin focused on maintaining peace and stability within the region.
He highlighted the longstanding cooperation between the Philippines and the US, stating, “For over seven decades, we have demonstrated its dynamism as we jointly respond to common challenges. Our cooperation has significantly contributed to the preservation of peace and security and has created opportunities for our mutual growth and prosperity.”
“The Philippines will continue to uphold and protect the rules-based international order amid a regional landscape that is significantly under stress,” Manalo concluded.
In a press conference following the high-level dialogue, Manalo clarified the deployment of US missile systems in the country, saying they are intended to enhance defensive capabilities and are not meant for offensive use. Hence, he does not see how such a thing would emerge into an arms race.
Blinken echoed Manalo’s sentiments, reaffirming the US commitment to upholding Philippine sovereignty and rights.
“In line with our treaty obligations, we discussed recent developments and committed to continue our work together in upholding Philippine sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction,” Blinken stated.
Blinken expressed gratitude for the constructive discussions with his Philippine counterpart, highlighting the significance of the first-ever Philippine-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue.
“I truly believe our discussions, and more importantly, our firm commitment to Philippine-US relations, undeniably demonstrate that our alliance is high and proud,” he said.
Both nations reiterated their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, a cornerstone of their strong relationship and alliance. This commitment underscores the mutual desire to maintain regional stability and foster an environment conducive to peace and prosperity.
