Marvel Studios has announced that actor Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a completely unexpected role, as Doctor Doom.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige made the announcement during Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday, July 27.
“Same mask, new task,” said Downey during the Comic-Con.
He also confirmed that the Russo Brothers – Anthony and Joseph Russo – will be directing the two films: Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in May 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set to debut in May 2027.
Doctor Doom will be the primary antagonist in the upcoming Avenger films, setting the stage for epic confrontations with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Downey made his MCU debut in 2008 as the beloved Iron Man and has since appeared in ten films within the franchise. His notable credits include the Iron Man series, The Avengers, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame.
