Former lovers Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto star in Star Cinema’s first movie for 2024. The project is crucial for the film studio, evident in their careful handling of it as their debut film of the year.
At a media conference held at the Dolphy Theater in ABS-CBN compound on Wednesday, the former couple addressed questions about their comfort level working together again after their breakup five years ago.
“I guess the movie answers that question. We wouldn’t do it if we weren’t ready,” Julia replied.
When asked if they were concerned about the project reopening old wounds or stirring up controversy, Joshua responded succinctly, “We are secure in our relationship. We know what we want and what we don’t want.”
The onscreen pair expressed gratitude to their fandom, known as JoshLia, for their continued support despite their breakup, and for enthusiastically rallying behind them upon the announcement of their reunion project.
“They have been part of this journey, and we’re happy they’ve stuck with us,” Julia remarked.
Regarding the lessons viewers can take from the film, Joshua and Julia discussed themes of personal healing, forgiveness, and acceptance.
“Juancho has his journey, Zy has hers, and all our characters here in the movie reflect each other’s journeys,” Julia explained alluding to their characters in the story.
“We all experience different pains and joys, but it’s about healing, letting go, accepting, setting free. The film will take you on a rollercoaster ride. We’re excited to shake up your lives for two hours,” she added.
Directed by Petersen Vargas and written by Kookai Labayen, Crystal San Miguel, and Jen Chuaunsu, Un/happy for You hits cinemas on Aug. 14.
Meanwhile, the movie’s teaser trailer has garnered over 23 million views across digital platforms in just eight days since its online release. Set to Moira dela Torre’s “Paubaya,” the teaser gives a glimpse of the couple’s cheerful memories and their heart-wrenching breakup.
The teaser also poses relatable questions for those who have loved and lost: “Is it joyful to revisit? Should you revisit it? Is it just wishful thinking? Is it sweet to revisit? Shouldn’t you revisit it? How do you revisit?”
Fans have already expressed excitement online as they await the release of the film next month. Joshua and Julia are also spreading love and excitement with their Un/happy for You: The Get Back Tour in malls nationwide before their film’s playdate. Their next stop is at SM City Cebu on July 13.
