Vietnam tossers bag Challenger Cup bronze

Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen did it again, as her monster game lifted Vietnam to another big win, this time a 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17 verdict over Belgium on Sunday in their quarterfinal encounter at the 2024 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Challenger Cup.

The 24-year-old Tuyen knocked in 35 points in their 98-minute showdown with Belgium.

Tuyen’s big output came a day after she bounced back from a low of 12 points when Vietnam fell to a 25-19, 25-14, 25-19 loss to Czechia during the semifinals on Saturday.

“I’m happy for the result. My teammates did better than yesterday,” said team skipper Tran Thi Thanh Tuy as Vietnam emerged as the best Asian finisher in the tournament.

Belgium committed 22 errors and fell behind on a Vietnam’s 10-2 run in the fourth set.

Slightly ahead, 8-7, Vietnam drew big plays from Tuyen, who scored the points off her three kills to lead her squad to an 18-9 edge.

Manon Stragier tallied 14 points for the Belgians and had five points when they took the third set, 25-21.

Belgium earlier moved into a battle for the bronze with Vietnam after bowing to Puerto Rico in straight sets, 25-19, 25-15, 25-16, on Saturday.
