Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray has expressed concerns about her health condition talking about her struggles with scoliosis.
The beauty queen revealed that her perfect posture isn’t natural. In a video wearing a striped shirt, Gray showed her relaxed stance, where she leans slightly due to the noticeable curve in her spine.
Gray shared that she was diagnosed with scoliosis when she was 12. Despite her early diagnosis, she was unable to pursue a brace to correct her spine since she had already undergone her growth spurt.
“My condition, most especially during my stint in international pageantry, put me on the receiving end of countless body shaming comments because of the “unflattering” angles my body creates,” the beauty queen admitted.
Gray stressed the importance of having an early diagnosis for scoliosis as it can help in limiting its progression as well as the pain that comes with the condition. Partnering with Scoliosis Philippines, the beauty queen hoped to spread awareness by encouraging people to wear a fitted striped shirt and check if there are any changes or irregularities in their posture.
“Scoliosis doesn’t have to be a limiting condition,” said Gray.
“I hope in my story – you can find the encouragement. That despite chronic pain, different shapes and sizes, proportions and angles – that YOU are capable of whatever dream arises in your heart! We’re #BentButNotBroken,” she added.
Scoliosis Philippines is a nonprofit organization aimed at raising awareness about scoliosis and supporting those with incurable conditions.
