Manila Standard’s “Clash of Kawali” is set to return for its fifth edition with a special Father’s Day theme, scheduled for June 22, 2024, at Lucky Chinatown Hotel in Binondo.
This event follows the recent Father’s Day celebrations held on June 16 and is proudly sponsored by SM Supermalls and Lucky Chinatown Hotel.
This year, the cooking competition will spotlight father-child duos, showcasing not only their culinary skills but also their unique bonds.
Former iterations include a Noche Buena showdown, two Mother’s Day specials, and a Pride Month celebration edition.
Team #1 features Russel Jupiter, 47 years old from Taguig City, and his 17-year-old daughter Angel, a student at Lyceum.
Russel and Angel enjoy cooking together, embodying their favorite quote: “Daddies and daughters may not always see eye to eye, but they are always heart to heart.”
They have joined the competition to try something new and gain valuable experience, hoping to strengthen their bond through this unique challenge.
Team #2 consists of Neil Baculfo, a 40-year-old Grab and Lalamove driver, and his 16-year-old daughter Shanina, who will be a Grade 12 student at Emilio Aguinaldo College.
Living in Amparo Subdivision, Caloocan City, Neil and Shanina bond over watching Netflix Korean dramas. Their guiding principle is, “Try your best and let God do the rest. Never give up.” The Baculfo duo aims to overcome their shyness and gain new experiences, making this competition a memorable bonding moment.
Neil shared, “Basta kami, enjoy lang, give namin ang best namin para sa Clash of Kawali. Manalo man o matalo, ang mahalaga mag-enjoy kami sa ihahain namin.”
Team #3 brings together Carlo Balio, a 52-year-old Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), and his 19-year-old son Christian, a student at Colegio De San Juan De Letran. Residing in Caloocan City with roots in Bohol, Carlo and Christian enjoy playing basketball together.
They live by the quote, “No love is greater than that of a father for his son.” The Balio team is motivated by the desire for exposure and experience, hoping to make lasting memories through their participation in Clash of Kawali.
Carlo commented, “Mahiyain talaga itong anak ko, pero pagdating naman sa studies or gaya nito, sa mga competition na ito, competitive siya. Siyempre ang gusto namin manalo pero tingin ko naman deserve namin lahat manalo.”
The event promises to be a heartwarming showcase of familial bonds and culinary talents. Each team brings a unique story and motivation, highlighting the diverse ways fathers and their children connect and create together.
From the Jupiter duo’s love of cooking to the Baculfo pair’s shared interest in Korean dramas, and the Balio team’s basketball bonding, Clash of Kawali will be a testament to the power of family.
Participants and spectators alike can look forward to a day filled with excitement, culinary creativity, and heartfelt moments.
