The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported Wednesday that an overseas Filipino worker (OFW), who was among the passengers of a Singapore Airlines flight that was hit by severe turbulence, has been scheduled to undergo surgery.
The DMW said the OFW suffered neck and back injuries during the incident last Tuesday when the plane she boarded from London to Singapore had to make an emergency landing in Thailand after experiencing dangerous turbulence.
“She is set to undergo surgery to address her neck fracture. No word as yet on the treatment or surgery options for her back injuries. Her condition remains sensitive, but stable,” the department said in a statement.
Representatives from the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok (PE-BKK) visited the OFW in the hospital and arrangements are being made for a family member to join her as she recovers.
Meanwhile, the Migrant Workers Office in London said that the UK-based Filipina staff nurse and mother of the two-year-old male infant is already a permanent resident in the United Kingdom. Her husband is there on a dependent’s visa. All three are in stable condition.
The fifth Filipino passenger, a 62-year-old male, was confined in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) after becoming unconscious. Doctors are monitoring his condition for further evaluation and treatment. A nephew based in Bangkok is assisting him.
Singapore Airlines is covering all the expenses of the affected passengers onboard flight SQ 321, which diverted to Bangkok after experiencing “severe extreme turbulence” from London to Singapore last Tuesday afternoon, 21 May 2024.
