NATIONAL University crowned itself champion of the 3rd Asia Pacific University Games (APUG) -Philippine University Basketball League (PUBL) with a stunning 87-60 victory over the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) Atlas as it completed the five-team competitions with a perfect 4-0 record at the Technological University of the Philippines gym.
The UPHSD Atlas finished third at 2-2, behind runner-up Mapua University Tech (3-1) in the five-day event supported by Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), Philippine Airlines (PAL), LT Group of Companies, Healthy Options, BESTANK Manufacturing, OMNI Electrical and Lighting, KELME -España Sportswear, Seascape Village, Fronte Motors, Paddock’s Casual Jeans, and Henn Athletic Club.
The 3rd APUG, a tournament held under the supervision of the Asia Pacific University Sports Union (APUSU), has invited the Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), the lone foreign team to participate. It finished with a win-loss record of 0-4.
APUSU president is Edwin C. Fabro, who is also the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines chief for 2024.
The APUSU and FESSAP joined hands in organizing the 3rd APUG-PUBL, with the FESSAP being represented by David Ong, FESSAP’s honorary lifetime president.
The host of the championship was Technological University of the Philippines, led by its president Engr. Reynaldo Ramos, who was represented by Dr. Ryan Reyes, TUP Vice President for Academic Affairs.
APUG-PUBL Organizing Committee members are Robert Milton Calo, Melchor P. Divina, Frank Gusi, Allan Soria, Antonio Quiza, Cecille Sarmiento, Albert Andaya, Romulo Raytos, Dr. Gisele Bonsol, and Indonesian APUSU Director Ferri Jufry, who was designated as the Championship’s Commissioner.
Ong represented FESSAP president Fabro as he awarded the championship trophy to the National University team manager and its coaching staff, led by coach Siot Tanquinsen, Glenn Capacio, and Seff Nada during the closing ceremony.
NU will field a team in the 6th Asian University 3×3 Basketball Championship in Putuo, Zhoushan, China from June 11 to 13.
The team will arrive on June 9 for the customary accreditation. The opening ceremony is set for June 11, which is also the start of the competitions. The closing ceremony will be on June 13 before the teams depart for Manila the following day.
Mapua University led from start to finish to an easy 79-43 victory over the Technological University of the Philippines Friday.
