Philippines recycles 1 billion PET bottles

PETValue Philippines, the country’s pioneering bottle-to-bottle recycling facility, has reached a significant milestone: recycling 1 billion used PET bottles, marking a major step forward in the collective fight against plastic pollution and in the Philippines’ transition towards a circular economy.

A joint venture between Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI) and Indorama Ventures, PETValue plays a vital role in giving new life to clear PET plastic bottles. The facility transforms used bottles into food-grade recycled PET (rPET) for new bottles, effectively closing the loop on plastic packaging.

“We are immensely proud of PETValue’s journey in the country, because it plays a valuable part in a much bigger system that enables a ripple of collective action and sustainable solutions against plastic pollution,” says CCBPI president and CEO Gareth McGeown.

Located in General Trias, Cavite, the P2.28 billion PETValue facility while using the most advanced bottle-to-bottle PET recycling technology, also generated around 200 direct jobs, contributing to the local economy.

Reaching the 1 billion bottle mark underscores the importance of collaboration between communities and organizations committed to a greener future.

“PETValue Philippines is a crucial component in our shared goal of making a positive impact. This milestone marks a significant step towards a more robust waste management system in the Philippines, paving the way for a future built on circularity,” said ESG Council chairman at Indorama Ventures Yash Lohia.
