Puerto Princesa City is poised to become the epicenter of global dragon boat racing, as the Philippines prepares to host the International Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championships from October 28 to November 4.
This momentous event promises to showcase the thrilling competition and unparalleled beauty of this renowned beach destination.
Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo Rodriguez Bayron expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, recognizing it as a significant milestone for the city.
“Hosting an event of this magnitude is an honor for Puerto Princesa. It presents us with a challenge that, once overcome, will pave the way for even greater endeavors in the future,” Mayor Bayron remarked.
Led by ICF President Thomas Konietzko, a delegation recently conducted a successful site visit, witnessing firsthand the preparations for what is anticipated to be the biggest sports spectacle in the Philippines this year.
During the visit, the delegation, which included ICF Dragon Boat Commission Chair Dr. Wai-Hung Luk, was deeply impressed by Puerto Princesa’s commitment to environmental preservation.
“The Philippines is proud to host this event, aiming not only for a competitive World Championships but also to provide participants with a rich cultural and natural experience,” said Konietzko.
Leonora Escollante, President of the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragonboat Federation (PCKDF), provided insights into the preparations, highlighting the nation’s enthusiasm for hosting such prestigious events. “It’s a challenge to bid for the hosting rights, but the Philippines’ beauty and the warm hospitality of its people make it a preferred destination,” Escollante stated.
Puerto Princesa, often dubbed “The City in a Forest,” is renowned for its awe-inspiring landscapes, encompassing a wealth of natural, cultural, and historical treasures. Dr. Luk expressed confidence in the city’s ability to deliver an exceptional championship experience.
“Puerto Princesa is poised to deliver a superb ICF Dragon Boat World Championships. It’s an event not to be missed, promising unforgettable memories for all participants,” he affirmed.
As the official national sport association for water paddle sports in the Philippines, recognized by the ICF, the Philippine Olympic Committee, and the International Olympic Committee, the PCKF is committed to ensuring the success of the championships. Medals will be awarded in open, women, and mixed events across several age categories and distances.
Anticipated to draw thousands of paddlers from around the world, the week-long event also serves as a qualifier for the World Games in Chengdu, China, scheduled for August 9-10, 2025. Puerto Princesa stands ready to welcome participants and spectators alike to this extraordinary celebration of athleticism and camaraderie.
