THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday said it has initiated preparations for the security of the 2025 midterm elections in the country.

PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said a PNP technical working group met recently with Commission on Elections (Comelec) chief George Garcia and Commissioner Aimee Ferolino on the matter.

Security preparations for the upcoming elections have started, Fajardo told reporters during a briefing in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

During the meeting, Fajardo said the PNP made recommendations to the Comelec to reclassify some areas of concern following a recent series of  attacks against local government officials in some parts of the country.

The attacks included  the fatal shooting of a chairman and a kagawad in Barangay Daja Diot, San Isidro, Leyte last week.

Fajardo said the police were looking at a possible political angle in the slaying.

Aside from the four suspects who were actually involved in the shooting, they are also looking at the possibility that there were two lookouts. They are looking into two persons of interest in this case,” Fajardo said.

In Zamboanga City on Sunday, an unidentified man reportedly shot dead a barangay chairman and wounded another village official.

Fajardo admitted however, that it was still too early to conclude that the isolated attacks were a “prelude” to poll-related violence in the 2025 polls.
