Universal Pictures has released a teaser for ‘Wicked,’ the highly anticipated live action film based on the Broadway hit musical of the same name, which was also adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ (1995).
The teaser showed various scenic clips from the upcoming film along with snippets of the iconic songs adapted from the musical.
‘Wicked’ follows the story of Elphaba Thropp, played by Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda Upland, played by Global Superstar Ariana Grande, who are two witches in a path of self-discovery.
The film is directed by Jon M. Chu from a screenplay by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, who had also written the stage play for the musical. Production sound mixer Simon Hayes, who previously worked on the film adaptation of ‘Les Misérables,’ had also worked alongside Chu as the vocals for musical numbers were recorded live on the set.
Other stars for the film who will be playing supporting roles include Award-winning Actress Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Jonathan Bailey, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, and Keala Settle.
The film will be split in two parts with the first set to hit theaters on November 27, 2024 while part two will be released on November 26, 2025.
First premiered in 2003, the ‘Wicked’ musical had received multiple accolades spanning its multiple productions, with the very first iteration starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth.
Following various rumors of potential actresses who will take the roles of the lead characters, Ariana and Cynthia were cast in their roles last 2021. The first photos for the live adaptation was revealed by Director Chu in his post on X last April 17, 2023.
