‘A great loss to public information:’ Robinhood laments CNN Ph closure

Sen. Robinhood Padilla reacted to the impending closure of broadcast network CNN Philippines, saying it is a great loss to public information.

Padilla, who chairs the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media, noted the loss of CNN Philippines is taking place amid much politicking in the country.

“My country. Amid all the politicking, this is what happens to our public information,” the former actor-turned politician said in a statement.

“O Allah, forgive me for my past mistakes and guide me towards the right path,” he added.

Padilla has called on the media industry to help combat fake news.

CNN Philippines stopped the deployment of news teams to their areas of coverage since Monday, Jan. 29.

On the same day, it also announced it is discontinuing operations on all media platforms effective Wednesday, Jan. 31.

It ended its nine years of delivering English-language news.

Nine Media Corp., the broadcaster’s parent company, suffered losses of P5-billion ($88.5 million) since it began broadcasting in March 2015.
