President Marcos on Monday congratulated Taiwan’s President-elect Lai Ching-te on winning his nation’s recent presidential election.

In a message, President Marcos said that he is looking forward to building stronger bilateral ties with Taiwan to foster peace and ensure prosperity.

“On behalf of the Filipino people, I congratulate President-elect Lai Ching-te on his election as Taiwan’s next President,” he said on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“We look forward to close collaboration, strengthening mutual interests, fostering peace, and ensuring prosperity for our peoples in the years ahead,” he added.

Taiwan elected the Democratic Progressive Party’s bet, Lai, securing a third successive term for the ruling party.

Lai competed against Hou Yu-ih of the conservative Kuomintang (KMT) and former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP).

Before becoming president-elect, Lai held several key positions such as vice president, premier, legislator, and mayor of the southern city of Tainan.

He also worked as a doctor specializing in spinal cord injuries before joining politics.
