Angeles mayor cites free spaying, neutering drive

Angeles City —The city government’s free spaying and neutering drive here covered total of 1,096 cats and dogs last year, local officials said.

Mayor Carmelo Lazatin Jr. viewed the accomplishment as a positive development, and cited full support from the communities “who put premium to the welfare of animals.”

The project was implemented under the supervision of the mayor’s chief adviser, IC Calaguas, and executive assistant Reina Manuel, both advocates of animal welfare, in collaboration with the city veterinarian, Dr. Christian Arcilla.

Arcilla said the spaying and neutering drive covered those who visited the City Veterinary Office, those who had a scheduled operation in the office, those who participated during the scheduled visit in barangays, and those who were rescued in Trap-Neuter-Release program at public schools, hospitals, churches, and markets.

“We started this in 2020 in the city’s own animal pound, only spaying and neutering rescued animals housed there,” Calaguas said.

Calaguas said that from then on, they saw this as an effective and humane way to control an unwanted animal population growth.

According to Arcilla, since the launch of the project in 2020, a total of 3,845 animals have already been spayed and neutered.

Meanwhile, Manuel encourages the townsfolk to adopt rescued animals in the city pound.

“After being assessed and given the necessary needs of the rescued pets, they will be up for adoption,” Manuel said.

Arcilla said inquiries about the adoption process and animal welfare programs will be entertained either by walk-ins or through their official Facebook page, Angeles City Veterinary Office.
