PNP suspends internal affairs official for sexual harassment

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday it suspended its Internal Affairs Service (IAS) chief for six months over a sexual harassment case.

The IAS is the PNP’s internal watchdog tasked with disciplining, monitoring, investigating and adjudicating administrative cases of erring PNP personnel. IAS inspector general Alfegar Triambulo was suspended from Dec. 1, 2023, to Feb. 14, 2024, according to an order dated Dec. 1 and released Monday.

Triambulo will retire from the PNP on Feb. 15, 2024.

“Considering that Atty. Triambulo is retiring from the service on Feb. 15, 2024, the remaining 106 days from Feb. 15, 2024 to May 30, 2024 is converted into fine and may be deducted from the retirement benefits, accrued leave credits or any receivable from the PNP,” the order read.

Triambulo was accused of sexual harassment and violation of the Safe Spaces Act by an IAS employee in a complaint filed with the Ombudsman on Sept. 5, 2022.

The victim accused Triambulo of transferring her to different units not related to her position as human resource management officer and of making inappropriate comments and offers.

Ombudsman Samuel Martires found Triambulo guilty of the administrative offenses of grave misconduct and gross incompetence in a suspension order dated Nov. 21.

The criminal aspect of the complaint, including allegations of falsification of public documents, was dismissed.
