Workers to get more aid for 90th DOLE anniversary

Various government assistance awaits thousands of workers this December in celebration of the 90th founding anniversary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), including 40,000 job opportunities from around 500 companies.

Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said the assistance forms part of DOLE’s assistance programs and affirms its continuous commitment to providing timely and appropriate programs and services to needy workers.

“These activities include the payout of assistance/salaries to beneficiaries of the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program and Government Internship Program (GIP); livelihood assistance to vulnerable and marginalized workers under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program; setting up of KADIWA ng Pangulo and livelihood fairs; and mounting of nationwide jobs fair,” the DOLE chief said in a statement.

For the Department’s temporary wage employment program, TUPAD, 73,048 beneficiaries across the regions are set to receive their wages amounting to over P289 million.

TUPAD is a community-based package of assistance that provides disadvantaged workers with temporary employment from 10 to 90 days, depending on the nature of work to be performed, and with wages based on the highest prevailing minimum wage in the region.

A total of 3,425 GIP interns from NCR, Central Luzon, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas stand to receive their stipends totaling over P14 million during the anniversary celebration.

GIP provides three to six months of internship opportunities for high school, technical-vocational, or college graduates who want to pursue a career in public service in either local or national government, with an allowance equivalent to the highest prevailing minimum wage in the region.

Under the DILP or the DOLE Kabuhayan Program, the Labor Department is also set to award over P177 million worth of livelihood to 9,783 vulnerable and marginalized workers nationwide.

To continuously facilitate employment, simultaneous job fairs will also be mounted in 24 different sites nationwide, with an initial 38,968 vacancies to be offered by 476 participating employers.
