Upon reading the title of the film, one would already guess that the story of the film revolves around five breakups and a romance. Well, close enough.
Five Breakups and a Romance is a romance-drama film about two opposite individuals who pursued a relationship after a summer fling in Singapore, only to find themselves in a series of break-ups.
The film is directed and written by Irene Emma Villamor, the mind behind successful romance films Camp Sawi, Relaks, It’s just Pag-ibig, Meet Me in St. Gallen, Sid and Aya: Not A Love Story, Ulan, and On Vodka, Beers, and Regrets.
Five Breakups and a Romance started as a challenge for the writer-director to push herself to write a different kind of a love story, “It started from a challenge sa sarili ko, hindi ko na alam magsulat ng love o parang kulang na sasabihin ko sa love story. So gusto kong subukan kung saan ko pa siya kaya i-push – what if puro breakups lang yung kwento?” Irene shared.
The film is top-billed by GMA Network’s Alden Richards and Cornerstone Artist Julia Montes. Five Breakups and a Romance is the comeback film of the two stars on the big screen.
Coming off from a widely successful blockbuster film in 2019, Alden returns to the big screen with more maturity, “I’m willing to go all-in for this film, because I feel like it’s worth it. I can’t explain, there’s no science behind it, it’s just gut feel. I know I made the right choice,” Alden stated.
Five Breakups and a Romance is also Alden’s first venture as a producer with his company Myriad Entertainment.
It’s also been a long time since Julia returned to the spotlight. From being a child actor to appearing in television series, Julia showed a bolder and fiercer side of herself in this film, “Ito pala yung sinasabi nila pag passion mo yung isang bagay, iba yung feel, na-empower ako ni Direk Irene dito sa film na ito,” Julia shared.
Five Breakups and a Romance is a GMA Pictures, Cornerstone Studios, and Myriad Entertainment production, executive produced by Erickson Raymundo, Alden Richards, Annette Gozon-Valdes, and produced by Jeff Vadillo, Vince P. Mariano, and Jose Mari Abacan.
The film unspools in cinemas nationwide today.
