Things you need to know about the new kid on the apps block
The online world is buzzing about the newest social media app in town—Threads—and we won’t let this chance slip without getting into the craze.
Meta’s counterpart for Twitter, Threads, as they call it, finally went live on Thursday morning in over 100 countries.
“Alright, friends, the apps have been published—though they will take some time to propagate—so we’ll start seeing the doors open right about now. These last few days with all of you have been really something special,” said Instagram Head Adam Mosseri on his own Thread account.
Getting its moniker as a Twitter clone, Threads is designed to lure people turned off by the social network’s changes under its new owner Elon Musk.
As we familiarize ourselves with the birth of this new social media app—its terms like threading and re-threading, or how it really works—we’re here to give you a rundown of all the basic things you need to know about Threads.
It literally says ‘Say More.’ The first thing you need to learn about Threads is that it allows its users to ‘say more’ without the need for verification (oops). Each text is limited to 500 characters, so you can share all those thoughts in one post.
It allows you to post more than 10 items. Yes, you read that right! Threads will let you post up to 10 photos or even videos in one thread (if that’s right). Unlike our usual four items, the newly-launched app genuinely gives you a fair number of media you want to share with your followers. So, get those threads of selfies or dump photos ready.
It aims to become an open and friendly platform. In the same post by Mosseri, he expressed his optimism in making Threads “an open and friendly platform for conversations.” With that, he encouraged users to not forget to use Hidden Words, Restrict, and the mention and reply controls.
It lets you like, thread, rethread, and mention. One common thing about all social media apps is that they let users interact with their followers and followings. Just like the bird app, you can reply to any thread, like them, and even reshare them to your feed. You can also mention whoever you want to mention. Just a reminder: Be kind with your words.
It has no direct messaging. There are features that might be similar to Twitter; however, here’s a heads up: as of its launch, interactions with your followers and followings are limited to liking, replying, and rethreading, as the feature for direct messaging is not yet available. Who knows, we’ll get there soon?
There might be a new app in town and a lot of things to learn about it, but one thing’s for sure: we can adjust to it just like we did before with other social media platforms.
