Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature Hall of Famer and multi-awarded playwright Layeta Bucoy tackles the impact of disinformation in familial relationships in her latest full-length production entitled Pamilya.
The two-act hybrid play introduces a dysfunctional Filipino family at the height of political disinformation campaigns in the Philippine social media landscape. In a clash of ideologies and beliefs, and with the head of the household working as a troll for the Mayor, each of the members find themselves navigating through the growing tension as fresh issues and hidden sensibilities slowly surface amid the pool of lies, distrust, and disconnection.
The two-hour production depicts how the influx of false information, along with one’s excessive ambition and outright denial of the truth, can infiltrate even the most personal spaces. It likewise highlights the proliferation of false information in the current times, its effects and manifestations in the daily lives of Filipinos, and how anyone is susceptible to falling into the trap of troll farms.
Directed by Gawad Buhay Philstage Awardee and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Theater Arts Program Chairperson Tuxqs Rutaquio, Pamilya was produced by Sining LABinsiyam (SiLAB), a group of budding thespians from the Theater Arts Program of Benilde School of Arts, Culture, and Performance (SACP). They were supported by fellow student-artists from the Music Production, Digital Filmmaking, and Production Design Programs.
