Calaca, Batangas is now a city after a majority of the residents voted in favor of converting the municipality into a component city, the Commission on Elections said.
Comelec acting spokesman John Rex Laudiangco said 29,424 residents voted in favor of the conversion as against only 3,781 “no” votes during the plebiscite conducted on Saturday.
Mayor Sofronio Ona Jr. expressed his gratitude to all residents who supported Calaca’s bid for cityhood.
“Calaca will experience faster development because it is now a city,” Ona said.
“This means more funding and more financial capabilities for more programs and projects for the Calacazens,” he added.
With this development, Calaca is now the fifth city in Batangas, after Lipa, Tanauan, Batangas, and Sto. Tomas.
It is also the first city in the western part of Batangas.
