Senior citizens regain hall mistakenly demolished by LGU

The senior citizens of a barangay in San Jose del Monte City in Bulacan got back their public hall partly torn apart earlier by a demolition crew of the city government.

Reconstruction of the senior citizens’ center within the money Hills subdivision in Barangay Muzon began in earnest upon intervention by the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).

A portion of the facility was mistakenly demolished during a clearing operation conducted on March 19 to broaden the space for the city’s Health Center VII.

Investigators Norberto Fontillas and Joel Ocampo responded to the complaint of the Senior Citizens Association, paving the way for a dialogue between the group and local barangay officials.

The village officials of Muzon said they only intended to clear obstructive structures, including a garage attached to the back of the Senior Citizen Center.

Taking full responsibility, they admitted having inadvertently damaged the senior citizens’ center, CHR said.

The barangay officials vowed to rebuild and repair the facility, including replacing the old roof with a new one.

In the meantime, the barangay hall’s annex served as the temporary center of the elderly while the reconstruction was going on.
