Heptathlete Dequinan strikes gold in Singapore

Sarah Dequinan took a silver medal in the 800-meter run to formally earn the gold medal in the women’s heptathlon event of the Singapore Open Athletics on Sunday.

The 26-year-old Dequinan collected 5008 points after clocking two minutes, 28.91 seconds in the 800, behind Norliyana Kamaruddin of Malaysia, who was first in 2:28.89. It was the Philippines’ third gold in the meet.

Dequinan, who will defend her crown in the coming Vietnam Southeast Asian Games, piled up big points after topping the 110-meter hurdles, the 200-meter run and javelin throw.

A second-place finish in the high jump, shot put and the long jump also put Dequinan in contention for the gold medal.

Kamaruddin, who will be Dequinan’s rival for the gold, took no. 2 with 4875 points.

Another Filipina entry, Josefa Ligmayo, was third with 4486.

Earlier, the men’s relay team of Frederick Ramirez, Joyme Sequita, Michael del Prado, and Al Rhyan Labita also took the gold in 4×400 meter action, along with the women’s relay squad of Bernalyn Bejoy, Eloisa Luzon, Jessel Lumapas and Maureen Schrijvers.

Ramirez and his teammates clocked 3:23.94, while Bejoy’s crew topped the distaff side in 4:02.26.

Janry Ubas settled for the silver medal in the men’s long jump after clearing 7.52 meters, with Malaysian Andre Anura taking the gold in 7.60 meters, and Ted Toh (Wings) landing third in 6.93 meters. Peter Atencio
