NBI seeks DOJ approval of Espinosa transfer to BJMP facility

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has endorsed to the Department of Justice (DOJ) the transfer of Rolan “Kerwin” Espinosa to a more secured facility at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Bicutan, Taguig City.

NBI OIC-Director Eric Distor said that the request is aimed at complying with the security and safety protocols of Espinosa as a witness under the Witness Protection Program while in the custody of the government and at the same time as an accused appearing at cases pending in different courts.

Distor added the move if favorably considered by the Secretary of Justice will result in the immediate transfer of Espinosa to the BJMP with ample security facilities equipped to hold high-profile prisoners.

On January 13, 2022, the NBI foiled an escape attempt by Espinosa and two other detainees thru the hole of the exhaust fan at the ceiling.

The swift and timely action of the newly-designated chief of the Security Management Section (NBI-SMS) and his executive officer has prevented the escape of the three detainees.“Security measures in the Detention Center and its surrounding premises have already been tightened with regular inspection of jail facilities,” Distor stressed, adding that an ongoing review of the status of the detainees’ case is currently being conducted.

As of this date, there are 79 detainees in the NBI Detention Center facing various criminal cases.
