Moreno urges Insurance body to rush Odette victims’ claims

Presidential aspirant and Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has called on the Insurance Commission to speed up the processing of insurance claims of Typhoon Odette victims who have lost everything in the aftermath of the most destructive typhoon to hit the country after Yolanda.

“I call on the Insurance Commission to speed up the processing of insurance claims to help our countrymen who were victims of Typhoon Odette. Their houses and businesses were destroyed, so the insurance companies must act quickly,” Domagoso told some 2,000 people, mostly farmers and agricultural workers, in Calasiao, Pangasinan.

“We expect our government to act quickly and the insurance companies must immediately give the claim of the victims because life is very difficult in the area that Odette destroyed,” he added.

The Insurance Commission is the government arm that regulates and supervises the insurance, pre-need, and HMO industries. The agency is under the administrative control of the Department of Finance.

According to the Aksyon Demokratiko standard bearer, hastening the processing of the insurance claims of the victims would be a big help in rebuilding their shattered lives, many of whom have lost their homes and livelihoods.

“This will provide assistance to families whose homes and businesses have been damaged in their areas,” he said.

Aside from the Insurance Commission, Moreno also called on the DOF’s Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to immediately process the claims of the thousands of farmers and fisherfolk whose livelihoods have been affected by Odette.

PCIC is the government agency that provides insurance protection to farmers against losses arising from natural calamities, plant diseases and pest infestations of their palay and corn crops as well as other crops.

According to Moreno, losses to crops are more devastating to farmers’ finances because most of them have small landholdings and rely mostly on credit.
