Grid operator National Grid Corp. of the Philippines aims to complete the P52-billion Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project within the December 2020 deadline.

NGCP chief finance officer Nanette Bugnosen said construction of the MVIP, one of the biggest power infrastructure projects to date, was underway.

NGCP earlier held the groundbreaking for the cable terminal stations that serve as the landing points of the two 92-kilometer submarine cables. The project will move around 450 megawatts of power from the Visayas and Mindanao and vice versa.

“I hope we finish as scheduled. We have already awarded part of the submarine cable. We are still nego with some LGU for the necessary permits to proceed with the work and also we are negotiating with some land owners for ROW clearance. When these are all complete, we proceed with the construction,” Bugnosen said.

The MVIP was provisionally approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission in 2017.
