Over a hundred global brands have confirmed their commitment to protecting the planet by signing the Fashion Pact.
Through the Fashion Pact, some of the biggest names in fashion—32 companies and roughly 150 brands—set goals to reduce environmental impact of the fashion industry, which is responsible for 10 percent of the carbon footprint of the world.
Its objectives, based on the Science-Based Targets initiative, target three key areas for safeguarding the planet, including:
Stop global warming by creating and deploying an action plan for achieving the objective of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, in order to keep global warming below 1.5-degree Celsius pathway between now and 2100.
Restore biodiversity by achieving objectives that use Science-Based Targets to restore natural ecosystems and protect species.
Stop single-use plastics by reducing the fashion industry’s negative impact on the world’s oceans through practical initiatives such as gradually removing the usage of single-use plastics.
The aforementioned commitments are designed to be embraced by every company involved, and backed by cross-sector initiatives along with the deployment of innovation accelerators.
Salvatore Ferragamo chief executive officer Micaela le Divelec Lemmi, and representatives of the other 32 companies signed the Fashion Pact during a meeting at the Elysée with French President Emmanuel Macron, who has presented the initiative at the G7 Summit held in Biarritz on August 24-26.
“We are proud to be part of this initiative. Thanks to the Fashion Pact, for the first time, major fashion industry players are joining forces to take on the largest environmental challenges of our century,” said Ferruccio Ferragamo, president of Salvatore Ferragamo.
Ermenegildo Zegna Group chief executive officer Gildo Zegna, for his part, said, “Zegna is committed in sustainable projects: we are vertically integrated and able to manage key directional projects as the #USETHEEXISTING one based on the recycling and upcycling of natural and technical materials. The Fashion Pact will be, for our Group, not the beginning of the sustainability journey, but the continuation of a commitment initiated by our founder Ermenegildo Zegna more than a century ago. That’s our legacy and our responsibility.”
In addition to Salvatore Ferragamo and Ermenegildo Zegna, other SSI brands that have signed the Fashion Pact include Burberry, Gap Inc., Giorgio Armani, Hermes, Inditex, Prada, PVH Corp., Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, and Tapestry.
