ASG suspect evades security check

The vetting process of security agencies must be checked following the arrest of a suspected Abu Sayyaf member who was working as a security guard in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, Philippine National Police Chief Oscar Albayalde said Monday.

“We have to investigate the different security agencies on their vetting process. This is what we want to know,” Albayalde told reporters.

He said the authorities will investigate how the agency of Al-Demar Saiyari y Murih alias Ali was able to hire him despite the existing warrant of arrest against him.

Murih was arrested for illegal possession of a deadly weapon. He was also allegedly involved in a kidnapping incident in Sipadan, Malaysia, in April 2000, police said.

“We have to investigate why his agency hires someone with a warrant of arrest. How come he was hired as a security guard?” Albayalde said.

“It’s as if that security agency did no vetting or background check.”

The suspect is now detained at the Southern Police District detention facility.
