SMB favored to win again

Four-time defending champion San Miguel Beer is still the favorite to win the coming 2019 Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup.

With its championship core intact plus the addition of many-time scoring champion Terrence Romeo, it’s easy to understand why the Beermen are once again picked to be the frontrunners to win a record fifth straight All-Filipino plum.

The PBA governors share the same sentiments.

“San Miguel is still the favorite,” said Ginebra governor Alfrancis Chua. “It’s All-Filipino and the biggest concern for all is June Mar (Fajardo).”

After missing action in the last Governors’ Cup, the four-time reigning Most Valuable Player is once again ready while his longtime running mates Chris Ross, Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot and Marcio Lassiter are all poised to assume their roles.

Add that to a rejuvenated Christian Standhardinger and a motivated Romeo and that gives the retooled Beermen even more weapons to defend their crown.

“San Miguel is gunning for its fifth title and it is clearly still the benchmark,” said Phoenix governor Raymond Zorilla.

Blackwater governor Siliman Sy echoed the two’s sentiments.

“As strong as the other teams are, many will still have their money on San Miguel,” he said.

The Beermen’s depth was also boosted with the acquisition of Ronald Tubid and Paul Zamar.
