With roughly 20 million international overnight visitors in 2017, Bangkok remains the top destination in Asia Pacific; it also placed first in 2016. The data is according the MasterCard’s Global Destination Cities Index, which ranks the top travel destinations based on volume and spend.
According to the report, visitors tend to stay in Thailand’s capital for 4.7 nights and spend $173 per day, on average.
Bangkok’s varied sights and attractions appeal to a diverse group of tourists.
It is home to major historical and cultural attractions, such as the Grand Palace and Buddhist temples Wat Pho, Wat Phra Kaew, at Wat Arun, among a couple more others.
Shoppers also flock to the city for its shopping centers and department stores in Siam and Ratchaprasong as well as to get the best deals at the sprawling Chatuchak Weekend Market. Bangkok is also a favorite among foodies with its roads lined with street-side food stalls.
Bangkok is also one of the most popular Southeast cities among Chinese tourists, and second to Singapore in attracting some of the highest spending visitors—raking in US$16.36 billion last year.
