To cut crashes, Nueva Vizcaya sets road safety summit

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya—The Philippine National Police, in partnership with other national government agencies, will conduct a Road Safety Summit this week to address the growing number of vehicular accidents along national, provincial and municipal roads in the province.

Police Senior Supt. Jeremias Aglugub, PNP provincial director, said the RSS will be held on Aug. 10 for the northern part of the province. The summit for the southern part is still being scheduled, he added.

“These activities will also involve other national government agencies, transport business, transport organizations and other civil society groups. We are expecting more than 200 participants for these summits,” Aglugub said during the Joint Provincial Peace and Order Council and Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council meeting.

The RSS will also involve the Land Transportation Office, Department of Education, Department of Public Works and Highways and local government unit officials concerned, the police chief added.

The summit was earlier recommended by concerned agencies of the transport sector in the wake of the increasing number of road accidents along the national and local roads in the province.

Earlier, Aglugub said the prevalence of reckless imprudence cases needs the following strategies such as traffic engineering, enforcement, and education.

He said the RSS will gather inputs for the formulation of traffic engineering initiatives, which will involve road safety conditions such as the installation of signages, traffic enforcement, the compliance of drivers and motorists to traffic rules and regulations, and driver education.

This will reiterate road and safety driving rules and regulations, including their legal responsibilities and accountabilities, Aglugub added.

Citing the provincial police report from April 1 to July 15, the police chief noted an increase of 81 crime incidents or 7.85 percent compared to the same period last year.

“Reckless imprudence cases resulting to physical injuries and damage to properties account for more than 50 percent of our total crime volume. The RSS is needed to reduce if not prevent these cases from happening in the future,” he said.

Governor Carlos Padilla, PPOC and PADAC chairman, has urged members of both bodies to feed in their issues and concerns regarding the transport problem in the province “so they can be discussed in the proper forum.”
