Milk debate

Senator Cynthia A. Villar, chairman of the Senate committee on agriculture and food, asks Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol (left) why the National Dairy Authority cannot meet the country’s demand for milk. Piñol asserted that the lack of genetics is the reason for PH milk importation, as there are only 2,000 cows available in the country for artificial insemination or embryo transfer. Villar encouraged the agriculture sector to produce cows adapted to the country’s conditions and thus increase dairy production. She also encourages backyard farming that takes care of carabaos and goats.
