Global Cebu stays in hunt

GLOBAL Cebu stayed in contention and in the hunt for a seat in the AFC Cup  knockout stage.

They handed Group G leader Yangon United its first defeat, 2-1, on Tuesday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Field.

Cebu and Yangon were tied even in the first 79 minutes, but everything changed when Darryl Roberts headed the ball from Dominic Del Rosario’s free kick to draw first blood, 1-0.

Then, Maung Maung Lwin struck with a header of his own in the 90th minute.

Cebu refused to give up hope, and they got a chance to qualify when

Rufo Sanchez was called into the game in  the final minute of injury time, and the Spanish striker quickly slotted in a  spot kick into the bottom right corner.

For, the three-time champion Global Cebu, its first win against a draw and loss kept their hopes alive a for berth in the Zonal semifinals.

Despite the setback, Yangon United stayed as the top favorite for the Zonal semifinals with their 3-0-1 win-draw-loss slate.

Over in Hanoi, FLC Thanh Hóa played Bali United to a scoreless draw.

Bali United has a 1-2-1 card in second position.
