This weekend, Filipinos will mark Rizal Day, a national holiday commemorating the life and works of Jose Rizal and the 121st anniversary of his execution when the Philippines was still under Spain. With the victory of the Americans against the Spaniards in the Spanish-American War, the Americans demonstrated they were more pro-Filipino than the Spaniards and named Rizal a national hero.
