Local firm challenges Uber

Owto, an innovative ride-sharing app developed by young tech Filipino professionals, is out to challenge transport network vehicle service providers Uber and Grab once it receives an approval from the government.

The newly introduced TNV offers competent and quality services backed by affordable and fairer rate, according to Pao Libertad, vice president and chief operating officer of Owto.

Libertad, who is also one of the developers of the app, said the innovation could compete with leading TNVs Grab and Uber.“The system is developed by a team, of course, world-class Filipino programmers,” said Libertad.

The group is headed by president and chief executive Joel Gayod, who expressed optimism Owto would soon  be accredited by the Land Transportation, Franchising and Regulatory Board. “We are positive, we are close to that ‘yes’ because we are willing to comply with the requirements of the government,” said Gayod.

Libertad said that on Nov. 15, Owto conducted a business presentation and submitted to LTFRB the necessary documents for accreditation on a later date. Libertad said Owto is a 100-percent Philippine company committed to being compliant with the rules and regulation set forth by the government.

Owto corporate secretary Eloisa Bayani assured that no operation would be done unless Owto got the accreditation from the LTFRB.

The developers said that with the launch of Owto, the duopoly of TNVs Grab and Uber would face stiff competition.

Libertad and Gayod said they are optimistic that Owto would be operational before end of the year as the demand for transport service is high even after the holidays. “We want to be operational by the end of the year but it will still depend on how long the accreditation process takes,” Libertad said.
