THE Pamantasan ng Lungsod na Muntinlupa Marshals turned on the heat in the second period to put away the National College of Business and Arts Wildcats, 65-53, yesterday at the PATTS College of Aeronautics gym in Sucat, Paranaque.
Daniel Austria showed the way with 14 points for the Marshals as they posted their first win in Group B.
Remar Argana added 10 points for the Marshals, who are in the early lead with University of Makati, which won by default over Emilio Aguinaldo College-Cavite.
Earlier, University of Luzon joined the AMA University Titans in the early lead of Group B following an 89-64 triumph over Asian Institute of Maritime Studies.
The Marshals first took charge with a 23-14 first-quarter lead following a three-pointer from Argana, who unloaded three-triples in opening period.
In the second quarter, the Marshals banked on two 9-0 spurts to gain a commanding 44-27 spread at halftime.
Daniel Medina, who had points and 14 rebounds, led the first breakaway, scoring on a three-point play and a drive that allowed the Marshals to take a 32-14 edge midway in the second period.
The foursome of Kenric Cilot, Dominador Lebii, Aaron de la Cruz and Lloyd Cabeguin then took turns in getting a second spurt going, handing the Marshals a 40-25 edge in the remaining 2:21.
The Marshals went on to enjoy a 60-40 edge with 7:18 left, and that’s off another basket from Austria.
Group A action resumes on Tuesday at the Technological Institute of the Philippines gym in Quiapo, with a three-game bill, featuring New Era University and the TIP Engineers at 10 a.m.
