THE Philippine Sports Commission will assess the performance of the Filipino athletes, who participated in the 29th Southeast Asian Games.
Commissioner Ramon Fernandez said this after the Philippines won its 23rd gold medal on Monday and stayed in sixth place with its 23-30-55 gold-silver-bronze medal haul.
“I’m not surprised with the poor performance. Based on past SEA Games performances, pababa ang performance,” said Fernandez.
The Philippines got its latest gold medal from 46-year-old Florida-based John Colin Syquia and his mount, Adventure E, in the individual showjumping event of the equestrian competitions.
The agency, according to Fernandez, will size up the situation, and find out the cause of the country’s poor performance in the Games.
He said there is a need to do this because the PSC approved a big budget for the Games and all the equipment requests of the national sports associations.
Last month, the PSC approved P86,777,500.00 to fund the 700-strong delegation to the Games in Malaysia this August.
The approved amount covers airfare, accommodation, uniforms and allowances of the contingent.
A big chunk of the budget is earmarked for the billeting of the national team.
“Binigay ng PSC lahat para preparations,” added Fernandez.
Aside from this budget, the PSC also took care of equipment requirements of the different sports.
The government sports agency also took the tab for the national team’s training camps and competitions here and abroad.
