CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna—A day after the regional police said 30 inmates had died in jails around Calabarzon over a five-month span this year, another detainee at the Sta. Rosa City Police Station lock-up cell perished after suffering a hematoma following a mauling from his fellow prisoners.
Sta. Rosa police chief Supt. Joel Estaris identified the victim as Restituto Soria, who was rushed to the hospital at 1 a.m. on Wednesday after vomiting blood. He died five hours later, with doctors saying he succumbed to shock and a seizure owing to his internal bleeding.
Soria’s death prompted Calabarzon Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Ma. O Aplasca to order Laguna provincial police director Senior Supt. Cecilio Ison, who supervises the Sta. Rosa police, to investigate the mauling.
Supt. Estaris also relieved the jail guard on duty, PO1 Naser Boila. Aplasca assured that appropriate administrative and criminal charges will be filed against any other personnel who will be found liable for Soria’s demise.
