PH, Japan sign P340-m Mindanao energy grant

The Philippines and Japan on Thursday signed a P340-million grant agreement for the improvement of electric cooperatives’ equipment in Mindanao’s conflict-affected areas.

National Economic and Development Authority director-general Ernesto Pernia said the project was expected to contribute to the long-term goal of reducing system loss by 13 percent, increasing line capacity by 130 percent and improving electric cooperatives’ power distribution equipment installation and maintenance work in Bangsamoro Area.

The project involves the provision of power distribution equipment such as transformers, poles, conductors and boom trucks to electric cooperatives.

It will be implemented by the National Electrification Administration and is a part of Japan International Cooperation Agency’s continuing support to peace and development in Mindanao.

The project will upgrade the power distribution equipment of six electric cooperatives operating in the area.
