Number of firecracker-related injuries stands at 524 so far

The Department of Health (DOH) puts at 524 the total number of persons injured due to firecrackers during the New Year revelry.

Health Undersecretary Eric Tayag says, this is 40 percent lower than last year.

He also recalls, the average number of injuries during the last 10 years was 1,000.

DOH will release the final tally on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has recorded a total of 224 injuries from firecrackers and stray bullets.

This is 43 percent lower compared to the same period last year.

Its figure for cases of indiscriminate firing stands at 23.

Police describe the New Year revelry as generally peaceful throughout the country.
