Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada’s asthma attack that forced him into a hospital was largely due to overfatigue from too much work, city hall officials and his son Jinggoy said Tuesday.
Estrada was released from Cardinal Santos Memorial Medical Center last Friday after contracting what was initially reported as pneumonia. His son, former Senator Jinggoy, later clarified it was due to asthma.
“Mayor Estrada works a lot, from morning until late evening, and it probably caused his asthma,” a city hall doctor said, asking not to be named because he wasn’t authorized to speak about it.
In an earlier statement, Jinggoy Estrada pointed out that his father had no pneumonia but suffered from tightness of breath due to over-fatigue and the weather.
The mayor is now resting at home after being discharged from the hospital, Jinggoy added.
While Estrada has no known history of asthma, the city hall doctor told Manila Standard the mayor’s difficulty in breathing could have been brought about by overfatigue, which is common among asthma sufferers.
“I cannot comment on his attending physician’s findings. But we all know the mayor’s working habits. Most of the time he forgets to rest,” Jinggoy said.
