Makati braces for ‘Nina’ onslaught

The city government of Makati placed its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council under red alert to prepare for severe tropical storm “Nina,” which is forecast to hit Metro Manila on Christmas Day.

Mayor Abigail Binay said the council will also preposition its resources in flood-prone barangays beginning midnight of Christmas Eve (December 24).

“The Makati DRRMC has started mobilizing our disaster responders and will preposition needed resources, such as amphibious trucks, rubber boats, and relief goods, in flood-prone areas in the city,” Binay said.

On the mayor’s orders, key members of the MDRRMC have assigned their respective personnel to 24/7 duty to provide the needed services before, during and after the typhoon makes landfall in Metro Manila. 

These include the city engineering, environmental services, health, and social welfare departments, the Makati Rescue and C3, and Ospital ng Makati.

Makati’s DRRMC Office handles the overall monitoring of operations and warning systems. The MDRRMC has also coordinated with concerned barangays to prepare evacuation areas such as public schools and covered courts.

Identified low-lying and flood-prone barangays in the city include Pio del Pilar, Bangkal, San Antonio, Magallanes, La Paz, Tejeros, San Isidro and Sta, Cruz in District 1 and District 2 barangays Rizal, Pembo and Comembo.
