House deliberation on revival of death penalty ongoing

The members of the House Committee on Justice are deliberating on a sub-panel report that recommends the revival of death penalty.

It has yet to be determined if voting on the measure will take place on Wednesday because lawmakers are still debating on the content of the report.

House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas is urging the committee to vote on the proposal reinstating death penalty and leave the debates to the plenary.

Two hours have passed since committee members began the hearing on Wednesday morning.

No legislator has made the motion to stop the discussions and begin the voting process.

The reimposition of the death penalty is included in the priority legislative agenda of the Duterte administration.

Many House members want death penalty for heinous crimes such as illegal drugs, murder, rape, arson and kidnapping while others prefer to limit the penalty to drug-related cases.
