Teener wins 1st regl Consumer Quiz Bee

ILOILO City—Sixteen-year-old student, accompanied by her mother from Aklan, won as grand champion in the 1st Regional Consumer Quiz Bee of the Department of Trade and Industry in this year’s Consumer Welfare Month.

Lyka Dawn Macolbacol of the Regional Science High School for Region 6 in Aklan, with her mother Doris, went home richer by P7,000 worth of gift certificates.

Joachim Regalado of the Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas Campus, with his father Cyril, representing Iloilo, won 1st runner-up while Remie Rose Barcebal of San Pedro National High School in Antique, with her sister Annie Rose,  won 2nd runner-up.

The runners-up received P6,000 and P4, 000 worth of gift certificates, respectively.

Consolation prizes were also given to representatives of Capiz and Guimaras.

The quizzes, divided in easy, average and difficult levels, were composed of questions which focused on topics about Fair Trade Laws, Consumer Act of the Philippines and Price Act.

The student contestants, along with their mother or father, or guardian, were from Grade 7-12 (high school) who were champions from their respective provinces.

DTI-Iloilo provincial director Diosdado Cadena Jr. said they were starting to educate the youth about consumer rights through the quiz bee.

Macolbacol thanked DTI for the learning she acquired after joining the contest.

“I learned the different information applicable in our daily lives,” she said.

She added she would share her learning with her friends, classmates and relatives.
